"Personality Adjustment is a summary of the theories, methods, and research of psychologists, organized on the basis of personality as a science. The goals, theories, and methods of the science first are introduced and then are applied in turn to the understanding of personality traits, to the dynamic structure of personality as a whole, and to the interaction of structure and environment. Because the goals of the science include the control of personality as well as an understanding of its mechanisms, applications to personal and social problems are considered within this framework. For example, the uses of stimulants and tranquilizers are discussed in connection with the personality trait of activity, and the value of psychotherapy is discussed in connection with minor personality disorders. Objective treatment of such problems is, of course, made difficult by the limitations of our present knowledge and by the inevitable biases of an author, but I have assumed that the reader would find it more useful to disagree with my opinion than to try to find out what my opinion is. Generally, applications have been separated from factual discussions in much the same way that results and interpretations are separated in a scientific article"--Preface.
