The State of the Environment : Environment and Health 1986. United Nations Environment Programme. / - [Washington, D.C.] : Distributed by ERIC Clearinghouse, 1986. - 83 P. : Ill. , 22 cm.

People depend for their well-being on the health of the societies in which they live. This report aims to show that the achievement of sustained development, the promotion of health, and the rational use of environmental resources are absolutely inseparable. Chapter I, "Health Effects of Human Activities With Environmental Consequences," addresses communicable diseases and the health effects of chemical and radioactive pollutants. Chapter II, "Some Major Activities with an Impact on the Environment and, through It, on Health," contains sections on crop rotation and other agricultural activities, land reclamation, water projects for irrigation, the use of agrochemicals, the provision of fuel and energy, the provision of housing, shelter and household services, and the need for economic growth and wide allocation of financial resources. Chapter III, "Development, Environment and Health," pertains to the economics of environmental protection and enhancement, operational methods of analysis and their application to the health impacts of environmental changes, and the interrelationships among all these factors. Chapters IV and V summarize the report and make both general and specific recommendations for action. (TW)
